Egypt's surreal desert wonderland
The White Desert is Egypt's most surreal landscape, located about 500km southwest of Cairo in the Farafra depression. Famous for its spectacular white chalk rock formations shaped by wind erosion, the desert looks like an alien planet or arctic snowscape.
The most famous formations include mushroom-shaped rocks, giant pebbles, and the iconic "chicken and tree" formation. At sunset and sunrise, the white rocks glow golden and pink, creating one of Egypt's most breathtaking natural spectacles.
The best time to visit is between October and April when daytime temperatures are pleasant (20-25°C). Summer temperatures can exceed 40°C. Most visitors take 4x4 desert safaris from Bahariya Oasis (about 4 hours) or Farafra Oasis (1 hour).
Overnight camping is the best way to experience the White Desert, allowing you to see the spectacular sunrise and sunset. Essential items include warm clothing (nights get cold), sun protection, and plenty of water. All visits require a local guide.
Most tours combine the White Desert with other Western Desert attractions like the Black Desert, Crystal Mountain, and the hot springs at Bir Sitta. Basic accommodation is available in Bahariya and Farafra, with luxury options at Bahariya's eco-lodges.
